Join us by running a Hub & Switch day

Helping people to switch to one of our recommended energy suppliers is a simple but powerful way to cut carbon footprints and household bills simultaneously.

Follow the six steps below to help to raise the bar in energy supply standards, and make renewable energy affordable for all.

Build a team

In our opinion, three to four volunteers is perfect.

Switch your community building (optional, but recommended)

Switching to Bulb or Octopus allows you to use a personalised link that earns credit when referring others these providers — up to £50 for you and £50 for the switcher. (Unfortunately London Power doesn't offer this referral scheme at the moment.)

Plan your Switch Day

It’s best to tie your Switch Day to one of your regularly meetings. Before your Switch Day, make sure all your volunteers know how to help people switch and why they should do it. Have at least one of your team explore the various energy suppliers’ help pages. You don’t need to know all the answers, just where to find them when someone asks.

Get the word out

You will know the best ways to reach out to your community. There are some posters in our resource pack for you to print off and slap on your walls and some graphics to use on social media if they might help.

Run your Switch Day

Keep count of how many people switched, so we can add up our collective impact. Make sure to have DIY Switching Guides to hand for anyone who is interested in switching but doesn’t need walking through the process. Finally, don’t forget to hand out information letters and consent forms!

We are building a social movement to raise the bar in energy supply standards, and make renewable energy affordable for all. That helps energy suppliers end ‘tease and squeeze’, be clear on cost and reduce their carbon footprint, so they can do better for people and the planet.

We’re inviting members of the community to host Hub & Switch days.

We recommend waiting until government requirements on social distancing allow you to do this either outdoors or inside in a COVID-secure manner. Please refer to your organisation COVID-19 policies.

Energy suppliers often offer cheap rates, but after a year many households forget to renew their contract. Households are then placed on a Standard Variable Tariff, which can increase fuel bills as much as 30%.

Looking at the world today, we see our energy consumption spewing dangerous greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and contributing to climate change that hits the poorest hardest.

Meanwhile, households often remain on overpriced tariffs through overcomplicated and unclear policies. Citizens UK’s listening campaigns in 2013 found that energy bills often are a significant factor in why people fall into debt. In fact, over 4 million UK households are currently in debt to their energy supplier.

A Switch Day is an event in which we empower people to switch onto cheaper, fairer, and greener energy deals.

Practically the Switch Day involves a small team of volunteers making themselves available, with their laptops, to help church/school/local business members to switch onto one of these cheap, fair and green energy deals if they want to.

We identify and promote the energy companies that implement fair practices. These are suppliers who are proactively taking customers and the planet seriously. They demonstrate that it is possible to be profitable, and be responsible for the environment.

Over 4 million people in the UK live in fuel poverty*. A fuel poor household is defined as one which needs to spend more than 10% of its income on all fuel use and to heat its home to an adequate standard of warmth. The Fair Energy Campaign aims to tackle fuel poverty systemically by addressing unbalanced pricing which often leads to debt in low-income households.. We believe people shouldn’t have to choose between putting food on the table or paying their energy bill.

 

*CAUSES OF FUEL POVERTY (NEA Statistics 2020)

  • Fuel poverty is caused by low incomes, high energy prices and energy inefficient housing.
  • 19.7% of all households living in properties with the lowest energy ratings are fuel poor – they make up 36.9% of all fuel-poor households. This is compared to only 3% of households that live in properties with the highest energy ratings – they make up just 7.8% of all fuel-poor households.
  • 21.3% of households in the private rented sector are fuel poor – they make up 37.6% of all fuel-poor households.
  • 79.1% of households in fuel poverty are classed as vulnerable, that is one containing children, the elderly, or someone with a long-term illness or disability.

  • Octopus Energy are the only energy company to be recommended by Which? every year for the past four years
  • Octopus Energy are Uswitch’s ‘Energy Supplier of the Year’ 2021, and Bulb are the runners up
  • London Power was founded by the Mayor of London and powered by Octopus Energy

A few other suppliers offer slightly cheaper tariffs, but so far, the fair and green practices London Power, Octopus Energy and Bulb are committed to make them the most ethical choice around, and the most economical long-term.

The Fair Energy Campaign is a volunteer-led movement to shift the market through a community’s purchasing decisions. Unlike switching websites, Citizens UK do not earn a referral fee. We believe all this money should be kept by our communities.
